Remembered for his leadership in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this civil rights activist participated in the famous “Freedom Rides” of the early 1960s and later became involved with the Black Panther Party. Stokely Carmichael was born on June 29, 1941, in Trinidad And Tobago. Immediately following the 1968 assassination of fellow civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., Carmichael was partially responsible for inciting riots in the city of Washington, D.C.
