Hunt was born into a well-to-do family as his father, Van Hunt, Sr., was a friend of Ohio Players drummer Jimmy “Diamond” Williams. Hunt has had an interest in music since he was a child, taking drums at 7 years of age and saxophones at 8 years of age, later studying bass and keyboards. He played guitar in a rock band named Royalty, too.

After graduating from high school, Hunt moved to Arlington, Texas for a short time before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996 to attend Morehouse College, where he studied English but soon dropped out to concentrate his music career.
