Yuli was inspired by his father, Lourdes Gourriel, a former professional baseball player for the Cuban national team, as should be the case for any young man whose father is a sportsman.

During his active career, Lourdes won several awards, including an Olympic gold medal.

Yuli took part in several baseball youth programs in Cuba when he was younger.

Yuli Gurriel began his career in 2004 and finished his youth career with the Sancti Spiritus and Industriales teams of the Cuban League. During the 2004/05 season, he led the Cuban league in scoring and runs.
