Joshua Allan Murray was born on August 12, 1984, in Syracuse, New York, and went to Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida.

He was drafted in the second round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft, which was held in June of that year.
