Woodson was born on March 10, 1965, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to James Woodson (Father) and Linda Jo Woodson (Mother).

Rod Woodson graduated from R. Nelson Snider High School in Fort Wayne. Later, he enrolled at Purdue University to study electrical engineering and received a full football scholarship.

Rod Woodson: Professional Career

Woodson won the state championships in both the low and high hurdles during his junior and senior years. He also played basketball during his junior and senior years.

In college, he was a cornerback and a kick returner on the defensive side, and a running back and wide receiver on the offensive side.

Woodson signed as a cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 28, 1987. For many years, a banner reading “Rod is God” hung in Three Rivers Stadium. His first career interception was also recorded the same year. He won a bronze medal at the 1987 USA Olympic Festival. He has also won medals at IAAF Grand Prix competitions.

In 1995, while attempting to tackle Barry Sanders in a game against the Detroit Lions, Woodson tore his ACL and required reconstructive knee surgery.

He returned to the field 19 weeks later to compete in Super Bowl XXX. He was the first player to return from knee reconstruction surgery. When the Rooney family decided not to renew his contract, he became a free agent for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After ten years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 1997. He was only with the San Francisco 49ers for one season.

He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 1998. He spent four years with the Ravens. He was a member of the Baltimore Ravens when they won Super Bowl XXXV.

In 2002, he signed with the Oakland Raiders, where he spent two years and appeared in his third Super Bowl. Later that year, after failing the Raiders’ physical, he was released.

Until 2008, he held an annual youth football camp and activities on the grounds of his former high school. In 2007, he was also a part of BBC Sports’ NFL coverage.

Woodson was hired as the Raiders’ cornerback coach on February 14, 2011. Woodson began working as an intern coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013.

Woodson has been named to the Pro Bowl eleven times, a position record. In addition, he was the first cornerback to be selected to the Pro Bowl. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1993 and an All-Pro selection seven times.

Woodson was one of five active players named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team and ranked 87 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.

He is regarded as one of the century’s top 100 players. Later that year, he was ranked 22nd out of 25 best NFL players of the previous 25 years by USA Today.

On January 31, 2009, Woodson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
