Mark Milley was born on June 18, 1958, in Winchester, Massachusetts, in the United States of America.
Milley’s father, Alexander (1924–2015), entered the United States Navy in March 1943 as a Navy Corpsman, serving in the 4th Marine Division and landing on the islands of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima.

General Mark Milley’s Professional Career
Mark Milley began his professional career after graduating. Milley has previously served with the 82nd Airborne Division, the 5th Special Forces Group, the 7th Infantry Division, the 2nd Infantry Division, the Joint Readiness Training Center, the 25th Infantry Division, the Joint Operations Staff, and the Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense.
Throughout the preceding 39 years. Milley has had command of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division; command of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) from December 2003 to July 2005; and deputy commanding general for operations of the 101st Airborne Division from July 2007 to July 2009.
He was the commander of the III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, from 2012 to 2014, and the commanding general of US Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from 2014 to 2015.
He was named Army Chief of Staff on August 14, 2015. Army Forces Command consists of three commands: Army Forces Command, Army Materiel Command, and Army Training and Doctrine Command.
It was one of the most significant reform efforts in more than four decades, and it was on par with the Army’s three highest-ranking commands: Army Forces Command, Army Materiel Command, and Army Training and Doctrine Command.
Situation in Afghanistan
Milley initially warned President Biden and the National Security Council that withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan threatened the re-emergence of the Taliban.
The Biden administration, on the other hand, ignored it and proceeded with the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, with the final troops expected to leave once the Afghan government took over Bagram Airbase. Following the withdrawal of US troops, the Taliban initiated a drive to overthrow the Afghan government and capital the following month.
As a result, the Taliban besieged and gained control of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, causing widespread panic and confusion among Afghans, particularly those who had previously collaborated with US officials and attempted to flee the country.
Thousands of Afghans rushed to Kabul Airport in a desperate attempt to flee the city, and the incident drew worldwide notice.
Milley, who advised the Biden administration on the risks and perils of withdrawing soldiers from Afghanistan, later indicated that he was unaware of any intelligence assessments indicating that the Taliban could take over Afghanistan’s capital city of Kabul in 11 days.
Many people are criticizing Milley’s decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, especially because he previously indicated that doing so would be perilous, prompting a discussion.
Some officials, such as Utah’s 2nd District Congressman Chris Stewart, have called for Milley to resign and accept responsibility for the chaos that followed Kabul’s collapse on August 15, 2021.
