Jean grew up as a Mormon. She grew up in Darien, Connecticut, and had always wanted to be a performer. She did, however, attend college first to put her goals to the test as a promise to her parents.

Jean studied ballet for one semester at the University of Utah, then three more semesters at Skidmore College for Women before moving to New York and enrolling at the Neighborhood Playhouse.

She studied acting with Sydney Pollack, where she met fellow student Dabney Coleman. Jean supplemented her income by modeling for the Conover and Huntington Hartford agencies. After graduating from the Playhouse, she went out to look for work.

Jean Hale’s Professional Career

His first professional job was in a commercial for Hudnuts. She got more work as a dancer on the 1960 Sing-Along with Mitch (1961) series, and she later appeared on stage in “The Male Animal” and “Everybody Loves Opal.” In Taggart (1964), The Oscar (1966), The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), and Like Flint (1968), Hale played Miriam Stark, Cheryl Barker, Myrtle, and Lisa, as well as Lisa in Like Flint (1968).

She also appeared in a number of television shows during the 1960s. In 1965, she played both roles in two episodes of Perry Mason.

Jean took a break from her career due to family issues, but soon after everything was resolved, she returned to the small screen. In 1984, she co-founded Coleman-Tanasescu Entertainment with Gino Tanasescu, under the name Jean Hale Coleman, before going solo in 2000.

That same year, she acquired film rights to her uncle Preston Q. Hale’s 1999 book Two Toes — The Coyote Legend of Green River, which was based on his experiences as a young trapper in Utah during the Great Depression.

Jean Hale was married to Dabney Coleman, a 1961 Emmy winner. They met while studying acting at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse. Quincy Coleman, Randy Coleman, and Kelly Johns were their three children.

Jean divorced Dabney in 1984, when their third child was born, due to some internal conflict, but there was a

big fall in her career after that, and she had to leave her career behind and care for her children on her own.

Kelly Johns and Mary (later known as singer-songwriter Quincy Coleman), as well as Randy Coleman, the middle son, all pursued musical and acting careers at some point in their lives.
