On October 4, 1999, Macario was born in So Lus, Maranho, Brazil. Macario began playing football at the age of four, following in the footsteps of her older brother Steve. Flamengo, a local football team in So Lus, is where she got her start.
She was only there for around 6 months before heading to the Cruzeiro football school. She and her family moved to Brasilia, Brazil’s capital when she was seven years old. Catarina was a part of the Brasilia Santos football club until December 2011, when she moved to the United States.
Her mother, a doctor, remained in Brazil to support the family financially. While playing with the San Diego Surf as a young player, she broke the ECNL’s all-time goalscoring record with 165 goals.
On February 1, 2017, Macario committed to Stanford University to play collegiately. As a freshman in 2017, she appeared in 25 games, scoring 17 goals and earning 16 assists.
As a result of her performance this year, she was named “ESPNW Player of the Year,” “TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman of the Year,” “Pac-12 Forward of the Year,” and “Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.” Macario has 14 goals and 8 assists in 19 games in her second season.

Catarina Macario- Professional Career
On January 8, 2021, Macario announced that she would forego her senior year at Stanford to pursue a professional career. Lyon signed Macario to a two-and-a-half-year contract on January 12, 2021.
She made her debut for Lyon in Division 1 Féminine on February 6, 2021, replacing Amandine Henry in the 37th minute against Montpellier. Macario is able to represent both Brazil and the United States in international competition. She was chosen to represent the United States of America at a number of junior levels.
Despite being approached on many occasions by the Brazilian Football Confederation, Macario declared that she wanted to represent the United States at the senior level.
On October 8, 2020, Macario was called up to represent the United States at the senior level for the first time, albeit she couldn’t play until FIFA cleared her. Later that day, she declared her American citizenship on Twitter. According to U.S. Soccer, FIFA gave Macario permission to represent the United States internationally on January 13, 2021.
International Macario made her debut for the United States on January 18, 2021, during a friendly match against Colombia, becoming the first converted American to play for the US senior women’s team.
She made her first international appearance on January 22, 2021, in another friendly against Colombia, scoring her first international goal. Macario was named to the United States’ roster for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will take place on June 23, 2021.
