Elizabeth Smart is a child safety activist, journalist, and champion. She is best known for spending nine months in captivity after being taken from her home at the age of 14.

Three years later, she founded the Elizabeth Foundation, which assists abduction victims, and began working with other groups such as The Adam Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and The National AMBER Alert, among others.

A fanatic called Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Ileen Barzee kidnapped Elizabeth. Brian’s wife was also complicit in the crime, as she backed up Brian’s decisions and assisted him in realizing his goals.

Brian David Mitchell took Elizabeth from her family house on June 4, 2002, approximately an hour after midnight, while she was in the bedroom she shared with her younger sister, Mary Katherine. She was compelled to go through the wilderness with him for hours until they arrived at a tent, where his wife, Wanda Ileen Barzee, awaited them. As previously stated, Brian claimed he was a prophet who performed a wedding ceremony and declared Elizabeth to be his wife, following which he and his wife assaulted her on a daily basis. They also put her under sedation and threatened to kill her if she tried to flee. The abuse continued for nine months, until her kidnappers were apprehended.

Elizabeth Smart- Discovery and Rescue

Mary Katherine, Elizabeth’s younger sister, was awake during the kidnapping and saw the kidnapper’s face in the dark.

Several months later, Mary Katherine suddenly realized that her sister’s captor resembled a man who had once worked as a utility man on their house.

She informed the police, who determined that the man was Brian, and they used his photos in an episode of the popular crime detective show “America’s Most Wanted” in February 2003 to track her down and solve the case.

Her kidnapper was later identified on a public roadway in Sandy, Utah, and she was freed by authorities on March 12th of that year.

Brian was sentenced to life in prison, while his wife received a 15-year federal prison sentence for her role in the murder.
