Alison served on the San Francisco Board of Education as one of seven elected commissioners from January 7, 2019, until her recall election on February 15, 2022. Collins was driven out of office by at least 79 percent of the vote in the recall elections.

On February 21, 2022, a campaign committee for recall elections was held, with numerous billionaires and millionaires pledging their support.

Collins and two other Board of Education commissioners, including board President Gabriela López and Vice President Faauuga Moliga, were up for recall elections. The campaign to remove Collins began on September 7, 2021, with the submission of at least 81,200 signatures.

The city officials reported on October 18, 2021, that 51,325 signatures had been certified for the recall elections slated for February 15, 2022. It was San Francisco’s first effort, following an unsuccessful attempt in 1983 by then-mayor Dianne Feinstein to depose her.

Collins was the first member of the school board to be recalled in San Francisco history, along with two other members of the board of education.

Collins became involved in a number of contentious Board of Education decisions, including the attempt to rename 44 schools, the attempted removal of Life of Washington murals, and the consultants’ controversial refusal to reopen the school amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Collins had complained about an event involving bullying and racist provocations at Francisco Middle School, which her daughters also attended at the time.

The contract of the school’s principal, Patricia Theel, was then refused to be renewed. Following that, Theel and two other San Francisco Unified School District employees accused Collins of bullying and encouraging a poisonous environment at the school.
