Allen has worked as a stand-up comedian and vocalist, opening for rock bands such as The Clash, after working in a variety of capacities throughout the 1970s.

He appeared in numerous films in the Channel 4 series The Comic Strip Presents in 1980 after becoming one of the Comedy Stores’ breakthrough acts in 1979. 

In 1986, he appeared in Comrades, a film about the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

He played Pepi in the final Carry On film, Carry On Columbus (1992), directed by Gerald Thomas and produced by Peter Rogers.

Keith made a cameo appearance in Twin Town, a black comedy directed by his brother Kevin Allen. 

The same year, he was cast in the BBC adaptation of Martin Chuzzlewit.

Allen appeared in two Harold Pinter plays at the Almeida Theatre in 2000, playing Lambert in Celebration and Mr. Sands in The Room, which was re-staged in July 2001.

He co-starred with Ulrika Jonsson, John Humphrys, and Clarissa Dickson Wright in the Endemol-produced BBC Two television show Art School in 2005, where he discovered a love of painting.

From 2006 to 2009, Allen played the Sheriff of Nottingham in the BBC Robin Hood drama series. 

In September 2013, he appeared as DI Hale in the BBC six-part drama series The Body Farm.
