Marshawn Lynch was born on April 22, 1986, in Oakland, California. He is the youngest of three siblings. Denise, a former Oakland Technical High School 200-meter sprinter, raised him on her own.

His father, Maurice Sapp, is serving a 24-year sentence for burglary after being convicted six times, twice for serious crimes.

In high school, he was named a PrepStar, a SuperPrep All-American, and the San Francisco East Bay Player of the Year.

He led his basketball team to the state semi-finals. He also competed in sprinting and jumping events in track and field.

Lynch began his football career in Oakland as a defensive back, linebacker, quarterback, and wide receiver. He played football for the University of California Golden Bears.

He was the primary backup to senior J. J. Arrington in 2004, but after Arrington graduated in 2005, he took over as the starter. In the 2005 Las Vegas Bowl, Lynch rushed for 194 yards and three touchdowns on 24 attempts.

He was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team in 2006, where he received several honors. He was also named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. He still holds the record for the most 100-yard rushing games at Cal.

In April 2007, the Buffalo Bills selected him in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He signed a six-year, $18.935 million deal.

In his first season game, he gained 90 yards on 19 carries. In November, he played a key role in the team’s victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

He then ran for 107 yards against the Dolphins on December 9, 2007. He surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark against the New York Giants on December 23.

This game aided him in becoming the Bills’ fourth rookie to record 1,000 yards.

In a game against the Cleveland Browns in November 2008, he rushed for 119 yards, his second time exceeding 100 yards. In addition, he scored his first touchdown as a receiver.

In the same month, he set a season-high with 134 rushing yards against the San Francisco 49ers. In a rematch against the Jets in December, he surpassed 1,000 yards rushing with 127 yards.

In 2009, Fred Jackson took over as the Bills’ running back. This season, Lynch rushed for 450 yards and two touchdowns on 120 attempts.

Because of his off-field legal issues and poor performance in the running game, the Bills traded him to the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2010 season.

He scored his first touchdown of the season on a 1-yard run against the Chicago Bears. In December, he scored three touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers.

In his first season with Seattle, he made up for his previous struggles by rushing for 573 yards in 12 games. His local fans dubbed his actions the ‘Beast Quake’ after the play that cemented his playing style in NFL history.

In 2011, he appeared in 15 games. In 2011, he set career highs on the ground with 1,204 yards and 12 touchdowns, his first 1,000-yard season since 2008.

In January 2012, he was named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster.

In March 2012, he agreed to terms with the Seahawks on a four-year, $31 million contract. He started all 16 regular-season games and two playoff games for the Seahawks. He rushed for 1,590 yards and 11 touchdowns on 315 attempts.

In 2013, he rushed for 1,257 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Seahawks. He was chosen to the Pro Bowl for the third year in a row, but he had to withdraw due to his involvement in Super Bowl XLVIII, which his team won.

In a rematch of Super Bowl XLVIII, he scored on the first overtime possession, giving the Seahawks a 26-20 victory over the Denver Broncos.

In 2015, he had 24 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl XLIX. The Seahawks were defeated in the Super Bowl by the New England Patriots.

Lynch and the Seahawks agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract extension in March 2015.

On February 7, 2016, Lynch announced his retirement. He later became a tutor to current football players from his alma mater in California.

The Oakland Raiders enticed Lynch out of retirement in April 2017. He agreed to a two-year deal with the company. Even after retiring, the Seahawks retained his rights and traded him to the Oakland Raiders.
