As a lawyer, he traveled to battle zones to collect confirmed eyewitness testimony, which he subsequently passed on to international human rights organizations.

He continues to create screenplays for Ken Loach, with his most well-known works including My Name is Joe (1998), Bread and Roses (2000), and Sweet Sixteen (2001). (2002).

Following their successful partnership with Ken, they filmed The Wind That Shakes The Barley in 2006, which covers the Irish War of Independence in the early 1920s and awarded the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or in 2006. 

In 2006, Searching For Eric, a comedy genre film, was released, and in 2010, Road Irish, a film about mercenaries in Iraq, was produced.
