Kelly got her first reporting job at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1993, where she stayed for a year before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue a second degree.

She earned a master’s degree in European studies from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1995. Mary interned with the BBC in Glasgow and London during the same academic year.

Her first post-college job was covering local politics for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, her hometown newspaper.

Mary joined the Boston team that launched the radio news magazine The World, a joint venture between the BBC and Public Radio International, after post-graduate studies in Cambridge, England, and internships at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in Scotland and London.

Mary returned to the United States in 20001 to work for NPR in Washington. For three years, she also edited NPR’s evening news magazine, All Things Considered.

She concentrated on novel writing and raising her sons, moving twice to Florence, Italy, from 2011 to 2014.

Mary joined The Atlantic magazine as a contributing editor in 2014, hosting live events such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, The Washington Ideas Forum, and CityLab London.
