Allison’s father, Robert Urich, was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer in 1996 while starring in The Lazarus Man. Synovial sarcoma is a type of cancer that attacks soft tissue.
He continued his career in the entertainment industry while battling the disease and ensuring that his work as an actor was not jeopardized.
Following that, he worked to raise cancer awareness and was honored with the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s and Gilda Radner Courage awards. Similarly, Heather Menzies-Urich, his wife, died of brain cancer.
She also previously worked for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Urich Fund, which raised funds for cancer research.
He was declared cancer-free in 1998. Robert revealed in an interview that his doctors discovered lumps in his body in November 2001 but that “a wonder drug” had cleared them up.
He had been admitted to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks a week before his death for breathing problems.
Regrettably, he died on April 16, 2002, in the same hospital. He died at the age of 55.
