Ships require captains, army squadrons require lieutenants, and basketball teams require coaches. Coaching is usually the least celebrated aspect of any sport because the players get all of the media attention, but it is a job that must be done.

Cue Alvin Gentry is a former college basketball player who has chosen the less glamorous path of being a soldier’s guide. He is currently the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

What is the net worth of Alvin Gentry?

With the Pelicans recently signing a four-year contract worth $3.4 million per season, as well as his earnings over decades with multiple NBA teams, determining the exact net worth of the Pelicans coach is difficult.

We do, however, understand that his career and net worth are on an upward trend.

He worked in private business for a year before returning to the sport that would become his life’s work.

In 1980, Alvin was hired as a full-time collegiate assistant coach at Baylor University.

He returned to the University of Colorado after a year, where he had previously worked as a graduate assistant.

He returned this time as an assistant coach, a position he held for five years.

Alvin Gentry: Professional Career

Alvin Gentry has led four different NBA teams and is currently the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, but his NBA coaching career began in humbler roles as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in 1989.

After two years in San Antonio as part of a four-man assistant coaching staff, Alvin moved to Los Angeles and became an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1990-91 season.

In the 1991 season, he worked as an assistant coach for Miami Heat coach Kevin Loughery.

His assistant coaching career did not end there, as he moved to Detroit after leaving Miami and served as an assistant for two and a half seasons before being named head coach in the late stages of the 1997-98 season.

Alvin’s first tenure as head coach was brief. In the 1999-2000 season, he returned to San Antonio as the head assistant coach, reuniting with some of his former assistants from his first stint in the city.

It was, however, a brief reunion, as the Los Angeles Clippers hired him as head coach shortly after he took the job in San Antonio.

He had a successful first two years as head coach, leading the team to 31 wins in his first season and 39 wins in his second.

During those seasons, the team was distinguished by the solid play of young players such as Elton Brand and.

However, in his third season, the team declined to keep him at the helm, and Gentry was fired in February 2003.

Perhaps it was viewed as a false start or a sign that he wasn’t yet ready to fully embrace the role of head coach.

Despite this, Alvin Gentry took a step back and worked as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns for six years, learning from various coaches. When Terry Porter was fired in his first year as head coach, Alvin was named interim coach. Later, he was named full-time coach for the 2009-2010 season.

In his first year as head coach, he had a personal career-high of 54 wins and 28 losses. The Suns made the playoffs but were eliminated by the Lakers in game six. He did, however, become the franchise’s fifth coach to lead his team to the Western Conference Finals in his first full season.

On January 18, 2013, Alvin Gentry parted ways with the Suns. In July, he returned to the Los Angeles Clippers as associate head coach. After one season with the Clippers, he signed a three-year contract with the Golden State Warriors as an associate head coach.

Although Alvin later signed with the New Orleans Pelicans on May 30, 2015, the agreement allowed him to stay with the Golden State Warriors until the end of the series, allowing him to win his first NBA championship with the Warriors’ victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
