Antoinette Tuff: Birth, & Fame

Antoinette Tuff is an American woman who rose to prominence by simply convincing a troubled soul that she cared for him.

She was born in Washington, D.C., but the specifics of her birth, including the date, are unknown.

When they were both children, she fell in love with Terry Tuff, who would become her husband.

It was a perfect relationship in which they deeply cared for and loved each other.

They married as adults and had two children, a daughter named LaVita and a son named Derrick.

He was born with a neurological disorder, which has rendered him legally blind and unable to walk.

Thirty-three years into their relationship, the walls came tumbling down, and everything came to an end in a split second in 2012.

She was devastated and in utter despair.

Tuff worked as the school bookkeeper at Atlanta’s Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy.

She was also working two other jobs to make ends meet, but in the midst of all of that, she was giving up on life and attempted suicide two days before she displayed such bravery in the face of impending evil.

In August 2013, she persuaded an alleged armed gunman to surrender. Her bravery made her famous and gave her a new reason to live.

Facts of Antoinette Tuff

On August 20, 2013, Antoinette Tuff dressed up like any other day and drove to Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, the elementary school where she works as the bookkeeper.

However, she was severely depressed and had no idea her story would be a turning point in the life of another man, let alone one on a murderous mission.

Tuff happened to be working at the front desk that day. The door swung open as she was settling into her new position, and a young armed man walked in. Michael Brandon Hill, 20, was holding an AK-47 with one hand on the barrel and the other on the trigger.

He was armed with over 500 rounds of ammunition and put the school on lockdown.

Even though her heart was pounding, she was overcome by a strange calm.

While one of the staff members alerted the school to the intruder at his command, she took his other commands, which included alerting the police of his presence and impending mission; shooting and killing; and calling a news station.

She spoke with her captor while the dispatcher was on the line.

The police then arrived, and a shootout ensued. She was able to persuade him to come back into the office.

Hill returned with a shoulder injury and has since become mellow. Tuff took command of the situation at that point.

She told him her story, her flaws – divorce, a suicide attempt, and a disabled son – and he, in turn, opened up about his history of mental illness; he has the bipolar disease.

“It’ll be fine, sweetie,” Tuff assured her. “But I just want you to know I love you, OK? And I am very proud of you.” Hill surrendered to the police after laying down all of his weapons.

She stared death in the face that day and didn’t flinch. Her character caused a tragedy to end in peace, and no one was harmed as a result.

She never imagined herself as a hero, saving over 800 lives with the most powerful weapons of all – love and compassion. Hill pleaded guilty to multiple charges and received a 20-year prison sentence.

She Immediately Became a Celebrity

Tuff’s life was forever altered as a result of the incident. Police officers arrived to take her statement, and news stations interviewed her as well.

As a result, the case became the only school active shooter situation in the United States to end without any deaths or injuries, including the shooter himself.

The bookkeeper is now well-known throughout the world.

In 2014, Antoinette Tuff became a best-selling author with her memoir, Prepared for a Purpose, an inspirational speaker, and the founder of school mentoring programs.

She also attended the State of the Union Address as a guest of the then-FLOTUS. Furthermore, she motivates people all over the world to overcome adversity.

The President also personally called her to express his gratitude for her bravery.

Her story was made into a film.

The Antoinette Tuff story was told in the 2018 Lifetime film Faith Under Fire, a project of Bishop T.D. Jakes.

Tuff and other actors such as Yaya Dacosta and Malik Yoba appeared in the film.

At the 90th Academy Awards, it was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.
