Artimus Pyle was born on July 15, 1948, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Clarence Pyle, his father, was a construction foreman, and his mother was a housewife. During WWII, his father also served in the United States Marine Corps. Artimus’ younger sister was Marilyn.

Pyle attended Eastmoor High School in Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated in 1966. He later attended Tennessee Technological University for a time. During this time, he was given the name “Artimus” because of his boyish appearance.

In 1968, he joined the United States Marine Corps and was quickly promoted to private first class. He mostly worked as an avionics mechanic at various military bases.

He was eventually promoted to sergeant. He received an honorable discharge after his father died in an accident in 1971.

Pyle began his musical career in 1974 when he replaced Bob Burns as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s drummer.

He made his musical debut on the song “Saturday Night Special,” which appears on the band’s third album, “Nuthin’ Fancy.” The album was released the following March. It debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200.

Pyle drummed on the band’s fourth studio album, “Gimme Back My Bullets.” The album was released in February 1976. It was a commercial success, peaking at number twenty on the US Albums Chart.

He also contributed to the albums ‘One More from the Road,’ ‘Street Survivors,’ and ‘Southern By the Grace of God’ in the years that followed.

He survived the Convair CV-240 crash that killed several members of his band in 1977. After two years, the band’s surviving members reunited in Nashville for Charlie Daniels’ fifth annual Volunteer Jam concert.

The surviving bandmates eventually formed the Rossington Collins Band. Despite this, Pyle had to withdraw due to a leg injury.

Later in 1982, he began recording and touring with the Pyle Band, alongside Darryl Otis Smith and Steve Brewington. Among the band’s albums are ‘Nightcaller’ from 1983 and ‘Life from Planet Earth’ (2000).

Pyle’s most recent work includes a guest appearance on the album ‘Primitive Son’ by American singer Eli Cook.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Street Survivor: Keeping the Beat in Lynyrd Skynyrd Skynyrd was supposed to be released in 2017. However, he is unable to publish it due to a pending lawsuit.

‘Nuthin Fancy,’ the third album by Lynyrd Skynyrd, was Pyle’s first recording. The album peaked at number nine on the US Albums Chart, making it the group’s first top-ten release.

“Saturday Night Special,” “I’m a Country Boy,” “On the Hunt,” and “Railroad Song” were among the songs on the CD.

Pyle also contributed to Street Survivors, the band’s sixth studio album. The book was released in October 1977. The record was a huge commercial success and charted well.

“What’s Your Name,” “One More Time,” “You Got That Right,” “I Never Dreamed,” and “Ain’t No Good Life” were among the songs on the album. Unfortunately, the band’s jet crashed just three days after the album’s release, killing the pilot and several members.

In 2006, Pyle and his Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
