Bill began working as soon as he was discharged from the Air Force. He worked as a car salesman in Cleveland and then as an IBM clerk before deciding to pursue his acting career.

Bill made his stage debut in “Ride a Black Horse” in 1971, obtaining the role of Lloyd in the St. Mark’s Playhouse production.

His performance was so convincing that he went on to play numerous roles on stage in various shows – in 1972, he was in Joseph Papp Public Theatre’s “Black Visions,” which was staged during the New York Shakespeare Festival.

He landed the role of Freeman Aquila in the American Place Theatre production of “Freeman” in 1973, which was his first main title role.

He appeared in films such as “What Winesellers Buy” (1973), “Les Femmes Noires” (1974), and “Black Picture Show” (1975).

His stage career flourished, and he was invited to appear in many Negro Ensemble Company plays, including “The First Breeze of Summer” (1975) and “Weep Not for Me” (1976).

He played in a number of Karamu House performances, including “Purlie Victorious,” as an alumnus. “The Amen Corner” (1981–1982), “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (1984–1985), and “Twelfth Night, or What You Will” (1984–1985) were among his other works (1980).

Bill did not turn down film offers and began acting in tiny and episodic roles in films such as “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” in 1974, “Greased Lightning” in 1977, and “A Hero Ain’t Nothin’ but a Sandwich” in 1978.

In 1984, he portrayed Walter in “The Brother from Another Planet,” Sgt. Williams in “Compromising Positions,” and Orvis in “The Color of Money” (1986).

He appeared in films such as “New Jack City” (1991), “Carolina Skeletons” (1993), and “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” in the early 1990s (1995).

He performed in films such as “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” (1998) and “The Ultimate Gift” (2001) over the next decade (2006).

His role in the comedy “Night at the Museum” alongside Ben Stiller increased his popularity, and he was asked to reprise his role in the sequel “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” but his sequence was cut.
