The next year, he got his first big break when Thirty Slews won his first Breeder’s Cup race.

His involvement in American classic races dates back to 1996, when his three-year-old colt, Cavonnier, finished second in the Kentucky Derby.

And the rest, as they say, is history! He has seven Kentucky Derby victories, seven Preakness Stakes victories, three Belmont Stakes victories, and two United States Triple Crown victories.

He also has a total of 17 Breeders’ Cup victories.

Baffert earned the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer three years in a row (1997-99) and was responsible for 11 horses being named Horse of the Year in their respective divisions.

He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2009.
