George David Newhart, his father, was a businessman, and Julia Pauline, his mother, was a housewife.

He is the eldest of four children. Virginia, Mary Joan, and Pauline are his three sisters.

Likewise, he finished his education at St. Catherine of Siena Grammar School in Oak Park.

He graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep in 1947.

He then attended Loyola University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1952.
