Richardson began his ice hockey career with the AA Belleville Bobcats of the minor ice hockey league.
He then joined the AAA Quinte Red Devils.
With the squad, he played for the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 1998.
Following that, he was picked by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
He played in the Ontario Hockey League with the team.
