The Montreal Canadiens selected the Engblom 22nd overall in the 1975 NHL Entry Draft.

He was an affiliate of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs for his first two professional seasons before making his NHL debut in the 1977 Stanley Cup playoffs with Montreal.

Brian won two Stanley Cups in 1978 and 1979.

Brian was on his way to becoming a top NHL defenseman in 1982 when he was involved in a trade to the Washington Capitals.

A season later, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings with Ken Houston in exchange for Larry Murphy, a future Hall of Famer.

He later joined the Buffalo Sabres before joining the Calgary Flames.
