Carlos Correa was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on September 22, 1994. Despite coming from a low-income family, his parents, Carlos Sr. and Sandybel Oppenheimer, were able to save enough money to build a small house in a fishing village in Santa Isabel.

Carlos had a strong desire to play catch in an alley near his house since he was a child. His practices and enthusiasm for the game prompted his neighbors to suggest that he join a youth league.

He was only five years old at the time. His hitting ability was so strong that he was assigned to first base. Throughout his childhood, his father continued to train him in their spare time.

Correa was an outstanding student who was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to attend Raham Baptist Academy. In 2010, he competed in the Perfect Game BCS Finals and the WWBA PG Underclassman World Championships, after which he met his hitting coach, José Rivera.

His performance in the 2011 PG World and National Showcases propelled him to the top of the class and earned him the title of Rawlings’ Defensive Player of the Year.

He finished 2011 by competing in the PG WBAA World Championships. At the start of the 2012 season, he set a PG record with a 97-miles-per-hour throw. He graduated from PRBAHS before signing a contract with the University of Miami and committing to play for the university.

Correa was selected first overall by the Astros on June 4, 2012. With the selection, he became one of the top players to be drafted directly from a Puerto Rican high school, breaking a record set by Ramon Castro in 1994, who was selected in the 17th round.

Correa was the third player drafted by the MLB draft, following Alex Rodriguez and Adrián González. On September 21st, he scored his 100th run of the season, becoming the first shortstop in Astros history to do so in a single season. Correa batted.279/.366/.485 in 2021, with 104 runs and 92 RBIs.

Following the regular season, he was named the most valuable player of the Astros by the Houston chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, his first such honor.
