After Carolyn informed Roy that Emmett had misbehaved and made derogatory remarks about her, Roy Bryant and his stepbrother J.W. Milam kidnapped Emmett.

J.W. Milam, Carolyn Bryant, and Roy Bryant, from left, in a courtroom in Sumner, Mississippi, on September 23, 1955.

Roy Bryant and his half-brother, Milam, were charged with murder but acquitted in the kidnapping and torture death of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black teen after he allegedly whistled at Carolyn Bryant.

The men later confessed in a magazine interview but were never tried again; both are now deceased.

The US Justice Department has reopened the investigation into Till’s death, citing “new information.”

J.W. Milam, Carolyn Bryant, and Roy Bryant, from left, in a courtroom in Sumner, Mississippi, on September 23, 1955.
They kidnapped him at 2:00 a.m. from his home, tortured him, and then killed him.

She claimed that the child approached her from behind and whistled at her when the case was filed in her favor.

White juries ruled that Roy and Milam were not guilty.

As a result, protests by All-Americans erupted across the country.

Carolyn admitted lying about the boy’s behavior toward her when questioned by Timothy Tyson, a research scholar working on a book about Emmett called The Blood of Emmett Till.

She also expressed her condolences to Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley.

Based on this, the case was reopened, but it was closed again in December 2021 due to a lack of proof.

Timothy was unable to bring Carolyn his taped conservation as well.
