What began in 1970 as local garage jam sessions resulted in the founding of the Greenwood Archer and Pine Street Band, which comprised the Wilson brothers.
The band’s name was changed to GAP (later Gap) Band.
From the beginning, Wilson and his brothers produced and promoted a distinct kind of exuberant funk music.
Wilson took over as the main vocalist for the band in 1973, and the band’s fortunes began to alter.
Leon Russell, a groundbreaking country rock performer who engaged Gap as his backing band, discovered it.
The Gap band’s little-known debut album, ‘Magician’s Holiday,’ was released in 1974 on Russell’s Shelter label.
Russell swiftly kicked the band out due to their poor performance, and they traveled to Los Angeles, where they signed a record deal with Mercury Label.
With Mercury, Gap reached new heights of success, with Wilson’s vocals taking center stage.
