Chris worked as a rifle company commander in the 5th Battalion, 87th Infantry in Camp Kobbe, Panama, after being promoted to captain. Following that, he served in the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment as an assistant operations officer, rifleman, and headquarters company commander.

He relocated to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After leaving the Pentagon, he worked for the US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as an assistant operations officer, squadron operations officer, squadron executive officer, troop commander, selection and training detachment commander, operations officer, squadron commander, and deputy brigade commander (support).
