Dabney Coleman: Birth, Parents, Siblings & Education

Dabney Wharton Coleman was born on January 3, 1932, in Austin, Texas to Mary Wharton and Melvin Randolph Coleman.

Dabney was interested in the military because it was popular among young boys at the time.

As a result, he enrolled in the Virginia Military Institute in 1949 before being admitted to the University of Texas, where he earned his law degree.

He was finally drafted into the United States Army in 1953. During his military service, he was stationed in Europe.

Dabney’s acting career began in the 1960s, following his training at Sanford Meisner’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York from 1958 to 1960.

His first film roles were in The Slender Thread (1965) and Downhill Racer (1966). He then made his television debut in That Girl (1966).

Around the 1970s, Dabney began to get roles as a character actor. Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974), Bite the Bullet (1975), Midway (1976), Mary Hartman (1976), and Fernwood Tonight (1976) were all films in which he appeared (1977).

He then appeared as ‘Judge Keith Hayes’ in the Academy Award-winning Melvin and Howard (1980). His comedic films include How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980) and You’ve Got Mail (1986).

Dabney Coleman’s versatility as an actor is undeniable, as he has successfully portrayed various and contrasting roles in an almost lifelike manner.

One of those roles was in Nine to Five (1980), where he played Franklin Hart Jr, a ruthless and sexist boss.

In Tootsie, he played the same role as a comic relief villain (1982). He has occasionally deviated from this stereotyped role, such as his character in War Games (1983).

Coleman received his first Emmy nomination for his performance in the television series Buffalo Bill (1987).

Later, he received an Emmy Award for his performance in Sworn to Silence (1987), which was followed by a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in The Slap Maxwell Story (1988).

The actor is also the recipient of two ‘SAGS’ Awards for his performance in the television series Boardwalk Empire (2010- 2011).

Coleman has also appeared in a number of television shows, including Apple Pie (1978), Fresno (1986), Drexell’s Class (1991-92), Madman of the People (1994-95), The Guardian (2001-04), Courting Alex (2006), Heartland (2007), Ray Donovan (2016), and NCIS (2019), to name a few.

Dabney Coleman has been married and divorced twice, and she is currently unmarried. In 1957, he married Ann Courtney Harrell and divorced her in 1959.

In 1961, he married his second wife, fellow actress Jean Hale. They were married for 23 years before divorcing in 1984, making it his second divorce.

Dabney and Jean Hale have four children (three daughters which include the singer Quincy, Kelly, Meghan, and a son Randy).

Dabney Coleman: Still alive or not

Dabney Coleman has experienced some age-related health issues. Following his diagnosis, he underwent successful treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

He also had throat cancer at one point, but he revealed in a 2012 interview that he was cancer-free.

Some untrustworthy sources reported in 2019 that the actor died on June 23rd due to age-related health complications, but this turned out to be a death hoax.

Dabney is still alive and well and working in the film industry. In 2019, he appeared in a few NCIS episodes.

He has aged well and currently resides in Brentwood, California.
