Danny Fenster- Professional Career
Fenster studied journalism in Chicago and worked for a refugee agency, where he met the Burmese community, according to reports. Frontier Myanmar, one of Myanmar’s most prominent independent news websites, employs Fenster as managing editor.
He previously worked for Myanmar Now, an investigative and longer-form reporting publication that was shuttered after the military assumed power in the country.
Prior to going to Asia in 2018, Fenster worked for news companies in Detroit and Louisiana. After working as a reporter and copy editor for Myanmar Now from mid-2019 to July 2020, Fenster joined Frontier Myanmar in August 2020.
He was apprehended in May while attempting to depart the country and found guilty of violating the Immigration Act as well as the Unlawful Associations Act. Authorities accused him of new, more serious sedition and terrorism-related charges without citing a reason earlier this week.
Each of these offenses could result in a 20-year prison sentence. He was convicted to 11 years in prison by a military court in Yangon for violating visa rules, associating with an illegal group, and dissenting against the military.
According to the news agency, Fenster is the only foreign journalist convicted of a serious felony in Myanmar. On November 3, a Burmese court dismissed Fenster’s bail request, and police accused him of violating immigration restrictions.
Meanwhile, the United States has termed Danny Fenster’s sentencing as an “innocent man’s conviction” and announced that it is seeking his immediate release.
