David Koch married his wife “Julia Margaret Flesher” in 1996 when he was 79 years old. 

Their wedding was a grandiose affair to which many people were invited. 

The couple had three children.

David and Julia had two sons, John Mark Koch and David Koch Jr., as well as a daughter, Mary Julia. 

When a USAir Flight collided with another aircraft on a runway at Los Angeles International Airport in February 1991, the businessman was killed.

Koch survived the disaster, which killed 35 people. 

This particular occurrence profoundly influenced him and inspired him to become a philanthropist. 

After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992, he endured many surgeries, radiation treatments, and hormone therapy.

In 1970, Koch joined the family business, Koch Industries. 

He went on to establish the company’s New York headquarters and, by 1979, was president of his own division, Koch Engineering.

He grew interested in politics and ran as the Libertarian Vice-Presidential candidate in the 1980 U.S. presidential election.

Koch is a Republican who founded Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE), a conservative political organization in the United States, with his brother in 1984.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992, and the disease returned several times. 

His cancer experience inspired him to support medical research.
