Dina’s father fought in the Egyptian army, but her parents decided to come to the United States with their children in 1977 in order to provide a better life for their children. Dina Powell was admitted into law school, but she was granted a year-long internship with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison because of her fluency in Arabic. She relocated to Washington, D.C., and worked in a variety of government roles, so she never had the opportunity to study law.

She joined the staff of Dick Army, the Republican Majority Leader in the US House of Representatives, and later became the Director of Congressional Affairs for the Republican National Committee, which led to her involvement in the George W. Bush presidential campaign in 2000.

Powell became the Deputy Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel during the Bush administration, eventually rising to Assistant, a senior White House staff member in charge of assisting the President on appointments across the US government; she was the youngest person to hold this position.

She was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs in 2005 and held the position for two years, during which time she oversaw the Fulbright Program and other similar initiatives, traveled around the world, and formed corporate partnerships, before leaving the White House in 2007.
