Dontari Poe was born on August 18, 1990, in Memphis, Tennessee, to black American parents, Robert Poe Sr. and Sandra Poe.

He is the youngest of three brothers, the other two being Pierre Poe and Robert Poe Jr. He grew up in Memphis’s Whitehaven neighborhood, where he attended Wooddale High School.

He was spotted by his school football coach while practicing with the marching band at Wooddale, and he was later invited to join the school football team.

Dontari had eight sacks and 63 tackles as a junior defensive tackle, earning him an all-state defensive lineman honorable mention.

Poe also played for Auburn, Mississippi, and Colorado in addition to his alma mater. He also competed in track and field. He was the state Class 3 champion.
