Dr. Mary Bassett is an American physician who has also served as a professor and a public health officer. From 2014 to 2018, she was the commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

She has remained an important part of the department as a professor of the Practice of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health in addition to being a director.

She has also worked as a clinical epidemiology associate at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Dr. Mary Bassett was born in 1968 or 1969 in New York City and raised there. She attended Harvard University to further her education and earn a B.A. in history and science. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree in 1974 and her M.D. from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1979.

She earned her MPH in Health Services from the University of Washington in 1985. She also finished her medical residency at Harlem Hospital Center.

Dr. Mary T. Bassett was named the next commissioner of the state department of health on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed the news while stating that she would be the next official in New York City to lead the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bassett previously served as the commissioner of the New York City Department of Health but resigned a few years ago.

She will be the first black person to hold the position, and in her statement, she stated that she will assist the city in focusing on inequities, ensuring that health care facilities are reliable, affordable, and accessible to all.

According to Bassett, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of public health while also emphasizing the structural racism caused by inequities.

She stated that as we near the end of the pandemic, we will create a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all New Yorkers to be treated fairly in healthcare issues. Previously, Bassett was commissioned as the head of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

She also spent around 17 years working at the University of Zimbabwe. Bassett has been confirmed for this new position, and he will serve as acting commissioner until that time comes. Her new position will begin on December 1st.
