Velez spent four years working in the United States.

While stationed in Sunnyvale, California, Velez began acting and enlisted in the United States Air Force. 

He was honorably discharged from the military in 1981 and later relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actor.

In 1983, he performed his first television part in For Love and Honor, but in 1984, he played Napoleon “Napo” Rodriguez in Repo Man.

In 1986, he made his debut television appearance as Alonso in the soap opera Capitol. 

Later same year, he appeared in the A-Squad series, which was broadcast on NBC in the United States, as Frankie “Dishpan” Santana, a new member of the team in the fifth and final season (1986-87).

In the soap operas Port Charles and General Hospital, he portrayed Detective Alexander Garcia, and in Days of Our Lives, he played Paul Mendez.
