After holding office as Attorney General of Massachusetts during the mid-1960s, this Republican Party politician served two terms in the United States Senate, becoming the first popularly elected African-American to serve in the US Senate. He and Democrat Walter Mondale were the authors of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Edward Brooke was born on October 26, 1919 in Washington, DC. He was the first popularly elected African-American United States Senator; Democrat Carol Moseley Braun was the second. He graduated from both Howard University and the Boston University School of Law. After finishing his studies at the former institution, he served in the United States Army during World War II.
