Eric Dickerson is a retired American football player. During his 11-year NFL career, which spanned the 1980s and early 1990s, he was primarily a running back. Dickerson had a successful college football career at Southern Methodist University before turning pro in 1983.

The Los Angeles Rams selected him second overall in the 1983 NFL Draft. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999, as a reward for all of his efforts. Dickerson has since branched out into sportscasting and owns a sports memorabilia company.

Eric Dickerson was born in Sealy, Texas on September 2, 1960, to Helen Dickerson and Richard Seal.

Despite a number of controversies, he ultimately chose Southern Methodist University (SMU) for his college education.

Dickerson set the Southwest Conference record for yards and attempts with 4,450 yards on 790 carries during his four-year college football career.

He also scored 48 touchdowns, tying the SMU record for total career touchdowns. In his junior and senior years, his outstanding performance earned him second-team All-American and first-team All-American honors.

Eric Dickerson: Professional Career

Eric Dickerson was the second overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He had an explosive rookie season, setting NFL rookie records for most rushing attempts (390), rushing yards gained (1,808), and rushing touchdowns (18), as well as two receiving touchdowns.

He was named Player of the Year, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, All-Pro, and Pro Bowl for his performance.

Dickerson maintained his sublime form in the 1984 season when he surpassed 2,000 yards and broke’s single-season record for most 100-yard games (12).

His 2,105 total rushing yards that season are still the most in NFL history. He was outstanding throughout his four-year tenure with the Los Angeles Rams, even though he left the team under controversial circumstances.

He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts after appearing in the first three games of the 1987 season for the Los Angeles Rams.

Dickerson finished the 1987 season with 1,011 yards in 9 appearances for the Colts, helping the team reach the playoffs for the first time in ten years.

After reaching the 10,000-yard mark in 91 career games, he became the fastest player to do so in the 1989 season.

The 1989 season was also his seventh consecutive season with more than 1000 yards rushing. Dickerson was embroiled in several controversies during his final two seasons with the Colts (1990-91) and his performance suffered as a result.

He was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders in April 1992, and after one season, he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons, where he played his final season.

Overall, the 1980s were the pinnacle of Eric Dickerson’s professional career. He led the NFL in rushing yards for four seasons (1983, 1984, 1986, and 1988), was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year (1986), was selected to six Pro Bowls (1983, 1984, 1986–1989), and was named to five First-Team All-Pro teams (1983, 1984, 1986–1988).

Eric  has pursued a career in sports broadcasting since retiring from the NFL. In August 2017, the former NFL star joined Fox Sports’ FS1 channel as an analyst, among other successful jobs.

He is a co-founder of ‘Original Mini Jerseys,’ a sports memorabilia company he founded with former teammate LeRoy Irvin.
