Gregory Wayne Abbott (born November 13, 1957) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 48th governor of Texas since January 20, 2015. Abbott, a member of the Republican Party, formerly served as Texas’ 50th Attorney General from 2002 to 2015. Since George Wallace departed office in 1987, he is the only governor of any state in the United States to use a wheelchair on a permanent basis.

Greg Abbott was born in Wichita Falls on November 13, 1957, to English parents. Doris Lechristia Jacks Abbott, his mother, was a homemaker, and Calvin Roger Abbott, his father, was a stockbroker and insurance agent.

They moved to Longview when he was six years old, and the family stayed for six years in the East Texas city. Abbott’s family relocated to Duncanville at the start of junior high school.

His father died of a heart attack during his sophomore year of high school, and his mother went to work in a real estate firm. He received his education from Duncanville High School.

He was a member of the high school track team and claims to have won every meet he entered his senior year.

He was a member of the National Honor Society and was named “Most Likely to Succeed” by his peers.

He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance in 1981, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Young Republicans Club. While at UT Austin, he met his wife, Cecilia Phelan.
