Abbott, a member of the Republican Party, formerly served as Texas’ 50th Attorney General from 2002 to 2015.

Greg Abbott was born in Wichita Falls on November 13, 1957, to English parents. Doris Lechristia Jacks Abbott, his mother, was a homemaker, and Calvin Roger Abbott, his father, was a stockbroker and insurance agent.

They moved to Longview when he was six years old, and the family stayed for six years in the East Texas city. Abbott’s family relocated to Duncanville at the start of junior high school.

His father died of a heart attack during his sophomore year of high school, and his mother went to work in a real estate firm. He received his education from Duncanville High School.

He was a member of the high school track team and claims to have won every meet he entered his senior year.

He was a member of the National Honor Society and was named “Most Likely to Succeed” by his peers.

He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance in 1981, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Young Republicans Club. While at UT Austin, he met his wife, Cecilia Phelan.

He graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee, with a Juris Doctor degree in 1984.
