On February 6, 1978, he was 29 years old when the storm hit. That winter was his first in Boston, and it brought with it a storm known as the Blizzard of ’78, which had a lasting impact on meteorologists and the region.

The fatal storm set a record in Boston with a sudden burst of snow that hit the city during the afternoon commute on Monday, February 6, lasting 35 hours and 40 minutes.

According to The Boston Globe, approximately 4,000 vehicles were stranded on state roads that day.

Harvey was recognized as the first meteorologist to correctly predict the impact and intensity of the Blizzard of ’78 as a result of his forecast.

He is currently the chief meteorologist for WCVB Channel 5.

Harvey also worked as a meteorologist for WROR-FM radio station in 1980. He later joined WCNV-TV as a meteorologist in 2002 and was promoted to chief meteorologist after then-chief meteorologist Dick Alber retired in 2009.

Harvey contributed to the book called Extreme New England Weather in late 2010, with his story of the Northeastern United States blizzard of 1978.

He is also an avid outdoorsman and a lecturer at MT, Harvard, and Boston Medical Center. He is also a member of the National Weather Association and is known as the “Dean of Boston Meteorologists.”
