When Howie was in college, he began playing football. He was a Villanova University player. He was chosen to play in the Blue-Gray Football Classic in 1980 and was voted the Most Valuable Player.
He had a promising start in his freshman and sophomore years, but his next season was marred by a reoccurring thigh injury, which he recovered from quickly and moved to the defensive end.
After graduating from college in 1980, he was drafted in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, where he wore the legendary number 75 for 13 seasons. He was also named to the Pro Bowl eight times.
As a left defensive end with the Raiders, he won Super Bowl XVII (1983 season). He left the NFL after the 1993 season.
Howie got the Sports Emmy Award for “Outstanding Sports Personality of the Year” in 1997.
In 2000, he was honored and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his services.
