Last week, on February 2, Councilman Devin Keith of Huntsville, Alabama, was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at a Walmart on University Drive.
He was charged with fourth-degree stealing,
a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a $6,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
Keith was elected to the Huntsville City Council for the first time in October 2016.
His popularity contributed to his re-election in 2020, and he is now in his second term on the City Council.
Similarly, his district includes parts of downtown and the majority of North Huntsville, as well as Alabama A&M University.
Is Devyn Keith incarcerated?
Devyn Keith was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at the University Drive Walmart.
He was, however, freed the same day he was arrested.
At 1 p.m. on February 2, 2023, officers from the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) were dispatched to 6140 University Drive on an unrelated call.
When cops arrived on the scene, they were informed of a shoplifting incident at a neighboring Walmart.
Devyn Keith, a council member since 2016, was identified as the shoplifter.
Keith was arrested and put into the Madison County Jail without incident.
Keith was freed at 5:34 p.m. the same day after his arrest and initial investigation.
Keith responded to the matter the next day on his Facebook page.
He clarified that he had left Walmart after using the self-service checkout.
He did not, however, pay for a $20 pair of headphones in his cart.
Following the statement, several people related to the scenario and
stated that they occasionally forget to pay for products at self-service checkouts.
Keith’s friends and well-wishers have rallied around him in the aftermath of the shoplifting charge.

Keith, a councilman from Huntsville, has been charged.
Devyn was charged with one count of property theft- stealing articles worth $500 or less after the shoplifting incident and his arrest.
According to Alabama law, the offense is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine.
Councilman Keith is now facing new theft charges, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
A warrant for the Council member’s arrest has already been issued by the Sheriff’s office.
Keith was expected to bring himself up after the second warrant, according to a spokeswoman.
The District 1 council member is facing four misdemeanor charges for allegedly stealing additional products from a Walmart store.
The matter was initially handled by the Huntsville Police Department.
To eliminate any conflict of interest or perception, it has now been transferred to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office.

Devyn Keith’s lawyer, John Taylor, said he had no comment at this time.
Devyn Keith is a City Council member in Huntsville, Alabama, currently serving his second term.
He was elected to the council for the first time in 2016 and will be re-elected in 2020.
Keith earned a Bachelor’s in Human Development and Family Studies from Samford University in 2012.
Keith then enrolled in The University of Massachusetts Boston,
where he earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 2016.
When Devyn Keith was elected to the Huntsville City Council in 2016, he became the city’s youngest elected politician.
He was also the youngest person to ever serve as President of the City Council.
