The American Bladesmith Society (ABS) is a non-profit organization primarily made up of knifemakers that promotes steel blade forging skills. The Knifemakers’ Guild was created in 1972 by knifemaker William F. Moran, who was also the Chairman of the Knifemakers’ Guild at the time.

They began putting on an annual show in which he showcased Damascus steel blades made from material sourced in India and Sri Lanka. They are mostly distinguished by a design that resembles flowing water. The company was founded in 1976 and became a non-profit organization nine years later.

The majority of ABS knifemakers forge their own blades and have developed their own classification system that includes Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Smith. They’ve also worked with a number of institutions to offer bladesmithing courses, and they’ve even opened their own museum.

Neilson was given the title of Master Smith for his abilities, which he had to earn through a series of examinations. Forging a Damascus steel blade with at least 300 layers is one of the requirements for becoming a Master Smith.
