Upon the completion of his law degree, Springer had the opportunity to meet New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy at a social function.
Jerry was hired to run for president, but Kennedy was slain shortly afterward.
After the assassination of John F. Kennedy, he felt emotionally scarred and determined to continue with Kennedy’s political ideas.
He then began working at the law firm Frost & Jacobs in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 1970, he ran for Congress in Ohio and nearly defeated Donald Clancy, an experienced Republican congressman.
But, the following year, he was elected to the Cincinnati City Council.
He was afterward ousted from his position in 1974.
Nonetheless, after five terms on the council, he was elected mayor of Cincinnati in 1971.
Subsequently, in 1982, he ran for Governor of Ohio but settled for a job as a political reporter and commentator for Cincinnati’s NBC affiliate, WLWT.
He rose to become Cincinnati’s No. 1 news anchor, winning ten local Emmy Awards for his regular commentary.
WLWT created his show, ‘The Jerry Springer Show,’ which debuted in 1991 and addresses issues such as gun politics and homelessness.
After three years of popularity, the show explores tabloid sensationalized issues.
