Her young parents, Natalia and Oleg Valtysheva, gave her up for adoption at the age of 13 months since she was born with lower leg abnormalities that necessitated her legs being amputated below the knee. Long was born in the United States and raised in Baltimore parents Beth and Steve Long.

She continued to participate in hobbies such as ice skating, horseback riding, trampoline, swimming, and even gymnastics despite her impairment.
