Guzman was born to Emilio Guzman Bustillos and Maria Consuelo Loera Perez.

His father was a cattle rancher by trade. Some suspect him of being a gomero, or opium poppy farmer.

He also has two younger sisters and four younger brothers. Guzman’s father violently abused him.

Furthermore, he became involved in the drug trade through his father, as he assisted him in growing marijuana for local traffickers.

By the late 1970s, Guzman was collaborating with one of the country’s rising drug lords, Héctor Luis Palma Salazar. Furthermore, he assisted Salazar in mapping routes for drug trafficking across Sinaloa and into the United States.

Later, in the mid-1980s, he oversaw logistics for Miguel ngel Félix Gallardo, one of the country’s main kingpins. Guzman, on the other hand, established his cartel following Gallardo’s imprisonment in 1988.

Guzman controlled organizations that produced, smuggled, and distributed large amounts of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, and heroin throughout Europe and the United States.

He was the first to use distribution cells and long-distance tunnels near boundaries.

This enabled him to export more drugs to the United States than any other trafficker in history.

Furthermore, Guzman’s cartel leadership brought enormous riches and power.

Between 2009 and 2013, Forbes named him as one of the world’s most powerful people.

Furthermore, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) assessed that he matched Pablo Escobar’s power and fortune.

Guzman was apprehended by cops in Guatemala in 1993.

In Mexico, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking.

He paid the prison guards, however, and escaped from a federal maximum-security prison in 2001.

When he was a fugitive, Mexico and the United States offered a total of $8.8 million in rewards.

In 2014, cops apprehended and arrested him once more in Mexico.

He did, however, escape before formal punishment in 2015 by using a tunnel beneath his jail cell.

Following a shootout in 2016, Mexican officials apprehended him. A year later, he was extradited to the United States.

Guzman was found guilty of various criminal counts in 2019.

These charges stemmed from his role as the Sinaloa Cartel’s commander.

He is currently serving a life sentence at ADX Florence.
