When John was 20, he was working at a water plant in Columbus when the district superintendent of the Georgia Assemblies of God asked him to become pastor of a small church in Vidalia.
In 1973, John moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, to lead a church of 175 people. According to John’s book, the church membership increased to 300 over the next six years.
In 1979, John moved to Evansville, Indiana, to lead the Calvary Temple Assembly of God. While there, John learned the ins and outs of television ministries, which he would put to use in Pensacola.
Similarly, as John stated in his book, church membership increased. It increased by 350 in three years to over 1,000 when he left in 1982.

On Valentine’s Day 1982, he left Calvary for Pensacola. The Wetzels informed John that they knew of a Pensacola church in need of a pastor. He went to Brownsville and couldn’t resist the call, he wrote.
