Madden was named head coach in 1969 and remained in the position until 1978.

In 1977, his Raiders won Super Bowl XI, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 32-14.

Madden led the Raiders to a 103-32-7 overall record, giving him the highest winning percentage of any NFL coach.

Madden switched to broadcasting in 1980 and spent the following three decades as an NFL color commentator for CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC, where he was known for his enthusiastic exclamations of “gosh!” and “boom!” as well as his silly sense of humor.

Madden’s outgoing personality led to a career outside of football; he has written several books and appeared in dozens of commercials.

He also gave his name to Madden NFL Football, a fast-paced home video game that was updated every year and became the best-selling sports video game of all time.

As a head coach, Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. On April 16, 2009, he announced his retirement from broadcasting, saying, “It’s time.”
