After graduating from high school, John enlisted in the Navy and served for a year as a third-class officer before leaving. During the 1950 Korean War, he re-enlisted in the marine corps in the midst of his post-graduation. He began his career as an aviation maintenance officer and rose through the ranks to captain. After graduating from law school, he began working as a legal clerk for then-chief judge E.Barret Prettyman.

In 1956, he began working as an assistant US Attorney. By the 1960s, he had established himself as a private lawyer and began working for Hogan and Hartson. In the 1960s, he backed Richard Nixon’s presidential candidacy, and in 1969, he was named Undersecretary of the Navy. Soon after, in 1972, he was appointed Secretary of the Navy by Vice President Richard Nixon.

He also decided to enter politics, running for the United States Senate in 1978 from the state of Virginia. He returned to work as a senior attorney at the law firm Hogan and Hartson, now known as Hogan Lovells, after quitting his Senate positions. He worked as a senior advisor for the firm, specializing in sectors such as aerospace, government, and defense.

John also served on the Atlantic Council as an honorary director. Over the years, he has endorsed a number of political candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties, including Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Mark Warner, and, most recently, Joe Biden’s presidential candidacy.
