Jon Brower Minnoch was born on September 30, 1941. He was born in Kitsap County, Washington, in the city of Bainbridge Island.
There is little information about his early life, but he is said to have weighed 133 kg (294 lb; 21.0 stone) when he was only 12 years old.
He had reached 230 kg ten years later when he was 22 years old (500 lb; 36 stone). As a young adult, he is said to have worked as a taxi driver before his battle with obesity prevented him from carrying out his daily activities.
Minnoch’s weight steadily increased until March 1978, when he was admitted to the hospital for cardiac and respiratory failure.
He was 36 years old at the time, and he was also diagnosed with massive generalized edema, a condition in which extracellular fluid accumulates abnormally in the body.
Dr. Robert Schwartz, a consultant endocrinologist, estimated that the majority of Minnoch’s body mass, approximately 408 kg (900 lb), was made up of accumulated fluid from congestive heart failure while he was in the hospital.
In addition to several health issues, Jon Brower Minnoch’s extreme weight made it difficult for him to move around. It took more than a dozen firefighters and rescue workers, aided by a specially designed stretcher, to transport him to the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
He was placed on two hospital beds that were joined together, and it took about 13 able-bodied workers to turn him over for a sheet change or cleaning.

The figures associated with Minnoch’s weight were apparently all estimated values because he was unable to get on a scale due to his extreme size, lack of mobility, and deteriorating health.

Jon Brower Minnoch’s first major hospitalization ended in 1979 after he lost 419 kg (724 lb) in a 16-month period.
Unfortunately, his weight began to rise after he was discharged, and he was readmitted to the hospital after about a year.
By the time he was re- hospitalized in October 1981, his body weight had reached 432 kg (952 lb; 68 st).
Following this second hospitalization, the decision was made to stop treating Minnoch’s weight problems because the underlying edema was discovered to be incurable and nearly impossible to treat.
