Nickels began his career as a roadie/light man for the band Hotshot, a forerunner of Danger Danger. He joined the metal band Virgin Steele in 1981. Nickels began his career as a bassist with the New York band Sweet Pain, with whom he recorded one album in 1985.
Kelly and drummer Ronnie Taz left Sweet Pain, and Victor Prestin took their place. He joined the band Faster Pussycat, but was seriously injured in a motorbike accident in October 1986 (at an intersection on the Sunset Strip in California). As a result of his injury, he was replaced in the band. His leg was shattered in seven places, and he needed to use a cane for a long time afterward.
