Joel Martinez is the real name of Kid Mero. He was born in Washington Heights, Manhattan, on May 15, 1983, to Dominican immigrant parents. His family moved to the Bronx when he was a child. He is Afro-Latino and spoke Spanish as a child. Miss Cibao, his younger sister, can be found on Instagram under the account ‘@misscibao.’

Mero formerly worked as a teaching assistant at a ‘Bronx’ school. He began blogging for Vice’s music portal Noisey in 2012. His first post for them, though, was a review of Canadian electronic music group Crystal Castles’ album III, which was released online on November 14, 2012.

Between November 2012 and March 2014, Mero contributed 69 pieces to Noisey, the majority of which were album and mixtape reviews written in caps lock. Mero holds a world record in this category. Mero, meantime, set a new record for kazoo solo in September 2014.
